A boost pedal is a unique type of pedal that increases the output volume of your guitar. It can also help you improve the saturation of your sound in areas rich with heavy rhythms. They don't affect the tone or frequency of your sound, nor do they add special effects like fuzz.

It's simple: adding a little extra volume to a guitar's signal presents more detail, power and glory to your amp's front end. Think of it like a zoom lens in a camera: your amp is able to “see” more signal, and make a bigger and better deal of it.

The Xotic “Voltage Doubler” is a step-up converter that takes 9 volts DC and boosts it to an output voltage of 15 or 18 VDC (max current draw 80mA).

It would be optimal in most cases to use two buffers – of high quality – placed evenly along the signal path. One buffer could be placed right at the front of your pedalboard, while the other could be helpful right at the output, where the signal is fed into a long cable.

But if you're looking for a simple estimate, then you might reasonably expect to need a buffer if you have 5 or more pedals that are all true bypass.
