Discussion Questions & Answers

Following are our answers based on the questions provided:

Q.1. How does the speaker’s family act during dinner? How does the minister’s family act during dinner? Why do they act so differently? Explain.
Ans: The speaker’s family acted excited and happy during dinner because they were familiar with the food being served. They are used to eating squid and fish eyes, so nothing about the meal bothered them. On the other hand, the minister’s family acted a little uncomfortable because they were not accustomed to Chinese food. They may have been hesitant to try new dishes or unfamiliar with certain customs, such as licking chopsticks before using them. This difference in behavior can be attributed to their different cultural backgrounds and experiences with different types of cuisine.

Q.2. What shapes a person’s identity? Is it possible for a person to change their identity? Should they try? Explain.
Ans: In this text, the author is discussing what makes a person who they are and whether it is possible to change one’s identity. The author states that their culture plays a significant role in shaping their identity. They also mention that while it may be possible to try and have a different identity, they believe that one cannot truly change their core identity. The author argues against trying to change who you are because they believe that your true self remains the same on the inside, regardless of any external changes you may make.

Q.3. What do you think could be the positive or negative consequences of ignoring your family’s past and traditions in favor of something that seems more popular or “normal”?
Ans: Amy was wrong in the story and she shouldn’t be negative toward her family traditions and should have been thankful for her mom because she did a lot of food. Amy thought this way her crush would think she was American type and fall in love with her but actually, he would think how would she respect me if she did not respect her mom’s hard work in cooking and her culture?

Q.4. Refer back to paragraphs 7 and 8. What does Amy’s mother understand about family that Amy couldn’t see as a fourteen-year-old? How is the relationship between family members different from other relationships? Do you agree that it is important to remember and stay true to your culture, heritage, and traditions? Why?
Ans: In my opinion, culture brings individuals together and it does not drive them further apart. In each culture, there are some days when all the family gather together and make food and have fun. For example, I am an Arab person so we have some days in the year when all my family and friends get together and celebrate these days.
