1. A Former Blank Canvas

Finishing a basem*nt is a considerable amount of work. However, if it turns out anything like the design above, I think we can both agree that it’s absolutely worth the effort. Designer Kate Chipinski started this project by adding new flooring.

Then, she added some furnishings and placed a large, neutral rug underneath the bed. Dark gray walls really make the DIY wooden headboard pop and a neutral color palette of grays and browns keep the room feeling grounded and timeless.

2. A Blue, Coastal Makeover

Lynn Hirsh Interior Design, lynnhirsh

This bedroom was originally furnished and already had all the essentials in place, the space just needed a little bit of love and a cohesive design plan for it to really come together. Designer Lynne Hirsh chose pretty blue wallpaper, a blue lumbar pillow for the bed, as well as a basket weave headboard, which brings calm, coastal vibes to an otherwise dreary basem*nt.

Blue is one of the best basem*nt colors to choose from because it evokes peaceful, serene energy. Note that after removing the exercise equipment and TV stand, the opposite end of the room (not shown) became an office space, so there is plenty of room for both work and relaxation in this basem*nt bedroom.

3. A Boho Bedroom Escape

This basem*nt was a blank canvas and came with muted walls, tiled floor and almost no natural light. The ceilings were also notably low, but designer Nick Toteda knew exactly how to warm it up and turn it into an inviting bedroom. Adding a large, neutral rug immediately softened the space, especially with the hard, tile floor.

Toteda chose a platform bed with built-in nightstands which is a great choice for a room with low ceilings. Toteda’s clients wanted this room to have a boho feel, and adding plants, and pops of red and orange certainly fit the bill.

4. A Cozy, Cool Transformation

Basem*nts come in all shapes and sizes, which means that some, like the space above, are especially long. What started as a boring, beige basem*nt with plenty of room to spare was transformed into a calm and cool guest suite, reminiscent of a hotel. To fill the extra wide space, designer Nicole Hirsch opted for two Queen-sized beds that share a nightstand. A gorgeous black marble bedside lamp with two bulbs completes the look.

Hirsch also swapped the warm beige color palette for cooler shades of gray, pairing the neutral gray bedding with a unique gray wallpaper that adds dimension and texture to the room. This basem*nt bedroom sleeps four and there is plenty of room, so guests can spread out and relax without feeling like they’re on top of each other. Who needs a hotel reservation when you can stay here?

Turn A Plain Room Into A Designed Space With Wall Decor

5. A Thoughtfully Decorated Room

Marian Parsons, @missmustardseed

While having the basics covered like a bed and nightstands is essential when it comes to putting a bedroom together, it’s really the finishing touches that personalize a space and make it special. This basem*nt bedroom, designed by Marian Parsons, used to have a lot of blank, bare walls, as well as a rustic, white nightstand. Parsons decided to add subtle and beautiful wallpaper to the walls, as well as picture frame molding to give the whole space more vibrancy and texture.

She also swapped the nightstand for an antique dresser, to better fit the scale of the room, and added finishing touches that include a framed baby dress and vintage German oil paintings. What was once a boring but practical bedside area turns into a unique and charming space, full of character and personality.

6. A Beige Box Turned Glamorous

Ashley Rosenow, @illustrious_Interiors

The last thing you want when entering a room in a basem*nt is for it to feel like it’s…well, in a basem*nt. Without any decor or design elements, this basem*nt bedroom was a beige box with a single, small window. Designer Ashley Rosenow knew exactly what to do to make this room feel light and bright, and began layering color and texture to breathe some life into the space.

Placing the bed directly underneath the window and choosing to add wallpaper to the wall behind it makes the bed the focal point of the room, especially as it’s flanked by two small nightstands and purple velvet curtains. A hanging chandelier adds a nice touch of glam while still being a practical source of light. This purple and gray bedroom is chic and sophisticated, a far cry from what it was before.

Keri Malafa, ESD Interiors, @esdinteriors

Basem*nts can oftentimes feel dark and dingy, especially when they’re unfinished like this basem*nt here. However, after the addition of walls and floors making the space into a cheery and welcoming place becomes manageable. Keri Malafa of ESD Interiors decided on a blue, green and white color palette for the basem*nt redesign, which instantly gives the room a boost of light and energy.

The blue and green floral wallpaper compliments the spotted navy duvet, and the bright green nightstand lamp is completely charming. This bedroom is now cozy and elegant, and you’d hardly even guess it was in a basem*nt in the first place.
